Palliative Care

The cancer patient’s journey

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative Care is a specialized approach to care that focuses on improving the quality of life for patients (adults and children) and their families who are facing the challenges associated with life-threatening illnesses. It aims to prevent and relieve suffering through early identification, correct assessment, and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial, and spiritual problems.

Key Aspects of Palliative Care:

Comprehensive Care: Addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
Quality of Life: Focuses on improving the overall well-being and comfort of patients.
Versatile Delivery: Can be provided by various health professionals and volunteers in homes, health centres, hospitals, and hospices.
Supportive System: Helps reduce unnecessary hospital admissions, benefiting the healthcare system.

Who Can Provide Palliative Care?

At Mountain View Oncology, we are committed to offering comprehensive Palliative Care through a team of trained professionals and partnerships with various disciplines.

Qualified Physicians: Each of our practices has a doctor trained in Palliative Care to oversee and manage the patient’s needs.
Collaborative Approach: While we may not have a dedicated multidisciplinary team within our practice, we work closely with a range of specialists in our associated hospitals. This includes Social Workers, Dieticians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Psychologists to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
Community Partnerships: In Paarl, we have a strong collaboration with the Paarl Hospice, enhancing our ability to provide compassionate and effective Palliative Care.
Specialized Facilities: At Kuils River Netcare, we have access to an “End-of-Life” in-patient room designed for terminal care, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of comfort and dignity during their final days.
