Radioactive Iodine
The cancer patient’s journey
What is Radioactive Iodine Therapy?
Radioactive Iodine Therapy (RAI) is a treatment that uses a radioactive form of iodine to treat certain types of thyroid cancer. It is a targeted therapy that specifically destroys thyroid cells.
How Does Radioactive Iodine Therapy Work?
Your thyroid gland naturally absorbs iodine from your bloodstream to produce thyroid hormones. When you take radioactive iodine (usually as a capsule), the thyroid cells absorb it. The radioactivity then destroys any remaining thyroid cancer cells without harming other parts of your body.
What to Expect During Treatment:
Preparation: You might need to follow a special low-iodine diet before treatment to increase the effectiveness of the therapy.
Administration: You will take the radioactive iodine by mouth, usually as a capsule.
Absorption: The thyroid cells absorb the radioactive iodine, and the radioactivity destroys these cells over time.
Isolation: After taking the radioactive iodine, you need to avoid close contact with others for a few weeks to prevent exposing them to radiation and you will be isolated for 3-5 days in hospital sometimes longer depending on how your body eliminates the therapy. Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to do this safely.
Benefits of Radioactive Iodine Therapy:
Targeted Treatment: Specifically targets thyroid cells, minimizing damage to other tissues.
Effective: Highly effective for treating certain types of thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism.
Non-Invasive: Administered orally, so no surgery is needed.
Possible Side Effects:
Neck Tenderness: You might experience some discomfort in your neck.
Dry Mouth or Eyes: Temporary dryness can occur.
Changes in Taste: Your sense of taste might change temporarily.
Fatigue: Feeling tired is common for a short period after treatment.
Is Radioactive Iodine Therapy Right for You?
Your doctor will determine if RAI is suitable for you based on your specific condition. They will explain the benefits and any potential risks to help you make an informed decision.
